FAQ

Why does our weight change with age

How can you find out if your weight has changed?

If there are less calories than muscle mass, then weight loss is possible. This means that the amount of calories consumed must exceed the amount of energy used daily. Low activity levels are the most common cause for weight loss. Other reasons include poor eating habits, stress, hormone imbalances, certain medications and illness. If there is more body fat than muscle mass, then weight gain can occur. It occurs when people consume more calories per day than they need. The most common causes are overeating, increased activity, hormonal changes, and excessive calories.

Our bodies lose weight because we eat fewer calories than we burn. When we exercise regularly, we increase our metabolism rate which burns off more calories throughout the day. But this doesn't guarantee that we'll lose weight. All that matters is whether we're losing weight or gaining muscles. If we are burning more calories than what we eat, then we will lose weight. But if we're consuming more calories than we're burning, then we're actually storing them as fat.

As we grow older, we tend to become slower at moving around and therefore we don't move as much. We also tend eat less than we used to. As a result, we gain weight. However, our muscle mass is more important than we realize and makes us appear larger.

Without weighing yourself each week, there is no way to know how much weight you have lost. There are many options for measuring your weight. You can also measure your waist, hips or thighs. Some people prefer using bathroom scales and others prefer tape measure.

For a better track of your progress, try to weigh yourself once per week and measure your waistline once every month. You can also take photos of your self every few months to track how far you've come.

You can also check your height online to find out how many pounds you have. If you are 5'10" tall, and you weigh 180 lbs, then you would probably weigh 180 lbs.

How can you tell what is good?

You have to listen to what your body says. Your body is the best judge of how much exercise, food and rest you should get. Your body will tell you what to do so that you don't go overboard. Take care of your body and make sure that you're staying healthy.

How To

What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins aid us in absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. Vitamins cannot be made by the body; they must be taken from food.

There are two types if vitamins: water soluble, and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the liver or in fatty tissue. These include vitamin D, E and K, as well as beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified by their biological activity. There are eight major categories of vitamins.

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - Vital for healthy bones and teeth
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K - Required for healthy nerves and muscles.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.
  • Q - Aids digestion and iron absorption
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, (FDA), sets the RDA value.

For adults over 19, the RDA for vitaminA is 400 micrograms per daily. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms is the minimum daily intake for adults over 50 years old to maintain good health. Breastfeeding or pregnant women require 3000 micrograms per daily due to higher nutrient demands.

Adults over 70 require 1500 micrograms each day, since they lose around 10% of their muscle mass every decade.

Women who have been pregnant or are lactating require more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 mg per day when breastmilk is being produced.
